Housework is Healthy?

Hello blog readers. I have missed writing this blog. Life has a way of getting in the way of, well, what I want to do!

My second fiction book, a group of short stories by eight different authors, was just released this month (see below). Getting the editing completed, along with trips to visit family, has taken time from writing. I plan on getting back to a regular blog writing time this fall.

However, I had to write this blog because it is so interesting! Singapore Institute of Technology and its research team concluded that the more housework you do, the better your brain and body operate – especially as you grow older.

Who knew?!?!

“Among older adults, housework is associated with higher cognitive function, specifically in attention and memory. The physical activity with housework is positively associated with functional health among community-dwelling older adults, independent of recreation and other nonrecreational activities.”

The report goes on to say that the more intense domestic chores (cleaning windows, painting, floor-washing, vacuuming) make a difference in specific areas such as attention span and short-term assessments.

In conclusion, the results from the study suggest that the “higher cognition, physical, and sensorimotor functions related to heavy housework activities might be associated with lower physiological fall risk among older adults.” Or in my words, the next time I’m cleaning a sink full of dirty dishes, sweeping, vacuuming, or loading the washing machine, I’m going to smile. Because all this cleaning is making me healthier!

Manna from Heaven

This Bible verse is a great encouragement to do my best in whatever the Lord has given me…even dirty bathrooms.

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” Colossians 3:23
