Personal Reflection

A Parent’s Calling

I am writing to all who have been called by God the Father, who loves you and keeps you safe in the care of Jesus Christ. Jude 1:1

Pastor Tom Mullins preached a powerful sermon at my church to encourage parents and especially fathers. He said there are three truths we need to identify with and speak over our children.

1. We are called.

2. We are loved.

3. We are kept.

As we organize and put order into our lives, I want to continue to emphasize to you what we should do first. And that is having a firm foundation in our life by walking with God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Success in this life, that is joy and peace, will not be yours apart from God.

Mother Teresa famously said, “If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.”

Sometimes I think we forget that one of the most loving things we can do as parents is to love our children with the full truth of the gospel – not a watered-down story, or a pep-talk of self-help. You see, I believe we are all missionaries to our people, right where we are from the first moments at our kitchen table to the car lines, dinner pep, laundry, and errands till we turn off the lights at night.

We are called. God has called you! No matter what you do or your profession. And because you are called by God, He will be with you in every situation. Nothing can stop you from fulfilling your calling as you continue in your walk with Him.

“And I am certain that God, who began a good work in you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” Philippians 1:6

We need to remember we are called to be the light of Christ to the lost world.

And when we are called by God our Father, we are given a sense of purpose which is so important to help us with the direction and the desires we need for our life.

We are loved. Remind yourself and teach your children that you are loved with everlasting love from your Father in Heaven!

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39

When Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, His Father sent a message to all of those who were there but especially to His Son, Jesus:

“And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him, I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17

Parents, we need to instill in our children that they are loved no matter what they do. Children without fathers have a void in their hearts. And some with fathers in the home don’t even know if their father knows or loves them. This can cause huge consequences for the future of these children.

We are kept.

There is a spirit of anxiety in every area of our world. But if God is with you who can stand against you? Remember to rebuke the spirit of fear and anxiety:

“For the Spirit of God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7

If you are feeling great fear or anxiety, give it to Jesus who wants to take our burdens from us. His Holy Spirit has been given to us to keep us on the path that God has planned for us. Nothing and that means nothing, can touch you apart from God’s will.  What comfort!

If we remember each day that we are called by God, loved by God, and kept by God, we can walk in peace and security no matter what is happening in the world. God has a higher calling for you and your family so live by God’s principles set in His Word.

Manna from Heaven

I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. The Lord watches over you – the Lord is your shade at your right hand, the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm – he will watch over your life.; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121
