Personal Reflection

Time With God is Everything

Be still and know I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Psalm 46:10-11

When I took the life-altering step to follow Jesus, I embarked on a personal journey of studying the Bible, praying, and engaging in fellowship with other believers. These were not just practical steps, but transformative actions that led me closer to the Lord.

Another part of walking with the Lord I heard repeatedly was to be still so that you could hear God. We must stop, be still, and listen to what God has to say.

But wow, is that hard to do in our busy lives! I would try it at times, but it has never become a daily habit for me until now.

A friend shared a book with me: 4 Minutes to Hear God’s Voice by Me Ra Koh. The author and her family began this habit almost thirty years ago, and the practice transformed their lives and their walk with God.

This book illuminates the transformative power of actively listening to God’s voice. It’s not a magic formula but a simple yet profound way to pause our activities and thoughts and tune in to God. The author suggests setting a timer for 4 minutes – you can adjust the duration to your preference. But the act of setting the timer itself can open a gateway for you to start hearing God’s voice, potentially transforming your spiritual journey.

God doesn’t talk to us in thunder and lightning but in a still, small voice.

Action Plan

How does one have a quiet time as well as time to be quiet and hear God?

First, find a place where you can be quiet and alone with God. For you mothers with young children, it may have to be in the bathroom or after the household has fallen asleep or early in the morning. But try to find a place you can go to every day or night.

Next, set out a devotional book, your Bible, pen and paper, and a clock or timer on your phone.

You may only have a few minutes to read a chapter from your Bible or a quick devotional. That’s okay! The point is to try to have time each day with the Lord. Pray and ask God to reveal what He wants you to hear. It may take a long time, but one day, you will hear His voice. It may be a word in your mind or a picture you see.

But I promise you! Your walk with God will be the best relationship you will have in your life, and you won’t be able to wait to spend your time with Him each day!

Emotional Check-Up

You may wonder how this time with God can help you become more organized or put your life in order. When we center ourselves on God, who is the creator of our lives, He will lead us to lives that glorify Him! We will begin to see the next step in our lives, and there will be less chaos. The best part? You will have so much more peace.

When we center on God, His Holy Spirit is full in us and we get His joy, love, peace and patience.

I pray you begin this transforming step in your life, for I know what a difference it has made in mine.

Manna from Heaven

Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice (I Kings 19: 11-12).

Just as God talked to Elijah in a still, small voice, He can talk to you and me. We just must make the time to stop, be quiet, and listen.
